death penalty

What is crime without retribution? What is a society without justice? The answer is simple. Chaos! There is no question that criminals should be punished for their crimes, but the kind of punishment used in some cases is questionable. The death penalty should be avoided at all cost. Punishing murderers to the fullest extent of the law is completely justified but the death penalty should not be an option for several reasons.

First, two wrongs do not make a right. How can we punish people convicted of murder by executing them? In our society, we stress that murder is inexcusable and that murder should never be tolerated, yet we execute murderers? If an enraged father kills the murderer of his daughter in an act of revenge, he will most likely serve time for his actions to reinforce the government's "zero-tolerance" for manslaughter. If the government kills the murderer for the same reason, to appease the loved ones of murder victims, it is called capital punishment. As human beings, we do not have the right to call judgement upon the lives of others. We should not be responsible for determining when an individual's life should be taken. In a modern, technically and socially developed society, primitive forms

By nature, human beings are vengeful creatures. This is why "eye for an eye" laws were started and why the death penalty still exists today. Despite the lust for revenge that lives within us all, we must learn to deal with the cruel realities of life and come to grips with our emotions. Putting your son's murderer to death is not going to bring him back or put an end to your pain and suffering. Instead of people being so set on getting revenge, they should spend more time dealing with the issue at hand and let justice prevail. Just because putting to death the murderers of loved ones will make some people feel better does not mean that the government should act on those emotions. If the government simply made laws based on the emotions of people, we could be in huge trouble. The death penalty is not healthy for the suffering loved ones of murder victims and should be erased from our retribution system.

Second, putting a person to death by means of lethal injection is not the most dreadful punishment. We want to provide the most effective and dreadful punishment available for convicted murderers and serial killers. Where is the punishment in the death penalty? The criminals are getting what everyone wants one day, a quick and painless death. Not only are they going to have a relatively quick and painless death, they often get to chose their day of death within a given time range and usually have years to prepare themselves for the day of their death. Not only
