What is a hero?

In today's modern times we hear the word hero all the time. The news media throws the term around as if it is an everyday word. But what exactly is a hero? Who exactly is worthy of this title? Did you think of some virtuous person who rescues people, putting life and limb on the line to help others? Did Hercules of ancient Greek mythology and Superman of modern times come into your mind? Did a police officer or some war hero enter your brain? If they did, then, from a certain perspective, you are correct. However, if such characters were all that you thought of, then you are also unquestionably very wrong. To the average person, a hero is much more.

A hero can come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and racial backgrounds. Heroes walk among us everyday usually oblivious to our knowing. Every single person that we classify as a hero is one because they did what they thought was right, or what was expected of them. Every American soldier killed in combat fighting for freedom and liberty. The police officers and firefighters that save lives, or who are killed in the line of duty. Those people who donate organs to save lives. Good Samaritans who risk their lives to save others. These people are the true heroes.
