George Bush

The third party candidate in America has seen relatively little success in the way of an office yet his mark has been left in many places in history. Theodore Roosevelt, one of this country's finest Presidents, was the first third party candidate to make a big impression when he ran for President in 1912 and placed second for his Bull Moose Progressive Party. Twelve years later Robert LaFollette ran for President for the Progressive Party and finished third with thirteen electoral votes. Finally, most recently Ross Perot ran in 1992 and 1996 was able to seize 19% of the popular vote in 1992 but no electoral votes. Obviously, the fact that third party candidates exist at all proves the point that not all Americans are happy with the current major parties and their candidates. Add to this that in a CNN pole 67% of Americans said that they would want a strong third party movement in both national and state government it can be clearly seen that Americans are nor happy with the current major party candidates. If two-thirds of America agrees to the fact that the current major party candidates aren't cutting it then something must be done. Also, the ridiculously low voter turnout amongst Americans says a great deal about what Ame

rica thinks about the current major parties. In 1996 of all the eligible voters in America 90 million of them did not vote, that is nearly 50% of those eligible to vote not doing so. America has consistently had the lowest voter turnout among democrats in the entire world; this is just utterly stupid. If one in every two voters do not vote in a place considered to be a great achievement for democracy something, without a doubt, has to be done. Finally, the presence of a third party candidate does something for the whole grand scheme of politics, mainly clearing out the political dead wood. New parties and new choices are good for this country, they inspire new ideas and new ways of thinking. However, because these third party candidates are being denied one of their unalienable rights they are unable to get these new ideas to the entire American public. It is a fact that with the immense amount of people in our country the federal government can in no way hear all of its peoples' requests. Bearing this in mind I believe that George W. Bush would be best suited for the presidential office this year. As President George Bush would allow education to be handled on the state level, free from federal control, which would benefit all in the long run. This is because with the vast differences in educational needs from state to state the federal government could in no way improve the educational system; most likely it would exacerbate the problem. More power needs to be returned to the states to ensure that more voices are heard and acted upon, George Bush intends to do just this. His plans for the environment push the same theme as well. He intends to return authority over the environ
