A detailed Summary of Chocolate War
I definately agree with the statement: "Evil triumphs when good people remain silent." Many times when people are stuck in compromising situations they choose to lay low and keep a low profile. If they just chose to open their mouth and say something then they could maybe help the situation. What often causes people to remain silent is the fear of being ridiculed or singled out. This proves to be true in Robert Cormier's novel, The Chocolate War, and John Knowles' novel, A Separate Peace. Jerry Renault chooses to open his mouth and stop evil from triumphing, while Gene proves that being silent will help evil to triumph.

When Archie, assigner for the Vigils, approaches Jerry with a proposition to refuse to sell chocolates for the school sale, Jerry knew this was his chance. The deal was that Jerry would not sell chocolates for ten days, but Jerry took the deal further. He did this for himself.
