In 1692 a new era of Devils and witchcraft began in Salem, Massachusetts. In the Crucible we discover that this craze was caused by a group of young girls who were "only sporting" according to Abigail Williams. In order to avoid severe punishment these girls began to pretend that they were possessed. This pretense caused an uncontrollable amount of fear, ambition, frustration, and jealousy and perverted pride.
