Special forces, highly trained branch of the United States Army, specializing in unconventional or guerrilla warfare. Popularly known as the Green Berets because of their distinctive caps, the modern special forces special forces came into being in 1952. The Green Berets objective in the Vietnam War was to observe the enemy and keep in touch with the United States. One other mission was to train selected South Vietnamese officers. They underwent four months of commando training taught by the first Special Forces personnel introduced into Vietnam, two officers and ten sergeants from the 14th Special Forces Detachment, during the summer and fall. These forty-four Vietnamese men were the 1st observation group. The next year the number of special forces had increased to over four hundred men.
