Winston Smith is just a lonely worker with too much time on his hands. His recent feelings about Big Brother and the Party are alien in the world around him. He feels as if he is the only sane person in all of Oceania. He, himself, was witness to the deceitfulness in Oceania. Though the entire story Winston seems to be not accepting things as they are, he wants to make a difference and not just be another 'loyal servant' of Big Brother and the Party. Julia decides that she doesn't have the power nor the will to even risk her life so greatly for something she believes can never happen. Even though all of this madness is happening in their world, they both find someone they can love and relate to. Many of these ideas can be shown within the book by using quotes such as this one. Winston-"I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don't want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones." Julia-"Well then, I ought to suit you, dear.
