During the Revolutionary war George Washington gathered up all the troops that he could. Many people didn't have time to be part of the Continental Army because they had families and farms to tend to, most of the men willing to enlist for long periods of time were young and single and had nothing tying them down. The Continental Army was greatly out numbered and out matched in military experience, yet somehow they managed to defeat the strongest army in the world.
