Today, about 16 million Americans are afflicted with diabetes, and most of those are type 2 (non-insulin dependent) cases. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in people of any age who are obese and inactive. The pancreas produces insulin, but the body's cells do not respond to it. If left untreated the results can be serious, including blindness, kidney disease and circulatory disorders, including strokes (Mader 885).
