Today, about 16 million Americans are afflicted with diabetes, and most of those are type 2 (non-insulin dependent) cases. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in people of any age who are obese and inactive. The pancreas produces insulin, but the body's cells do not respond to it. If left untreated the results can be serious, including blindness, kidney disease and circulatory disorders, including strokes (Mader 885). African-Americans, native-Americans, and Hispanics are at a greater risk than other ethnic groups. There are oral medications available today that increase the amount of insulin produced by the body or make the cells more receptive and abs
