Darkness And Its Role In Agamemnon

As time has past and written stories have been read, the use of darkness as a symbol has been frequent in trying to represent evil, concealment, and blindness. Such is this in the story of Agamemnon, where the symbolism can be seen in the beginning of the story where betrayal and murder are frequent. The darkness that consumes the scenes in Agamemnon is used for effect in order to convey indirectly, themes of evil, thoughts of betrayal, and lies of deceit.

The darkness of the time and theme of deceit is clear in the opening seen in which the watchman is discussing how the queen that he is watching is being very deceitful in the way that she is behaving. She has taken on a mister who is actually her husband's archrival. The scene is in the dark of night with only light from the fires from Troy in the distance. The idea of the darkness covering the affair so that it can


of Clytaemestra. Clytaemestra uses this darkness in her best interest and uses it to perfection since Agamemnon had no idea what was going on while he was away. The darkness of the opening twilight as the watchman sees is an early warning that just as light is hidden in darkness, so is the truth of the affair hidden in the actions of the play.

In addition to being able to convey the message of evil and deceit, darkness is also able to symbolize blindness. In the play where Clytaemestra greets Agamemnon the audience knows of the facade that she is putting up in front of him. His blindness comes form his inability to see the deceit that has been going on while he has been away. The audience feels sorrow for Agamemnon as he knows not what has been going on behind his back and that he will eventually pay for his blindness with his life. He suspects no one of deceit and thoughts of his own wife plotting against
