Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert. At the age of sixteen, he started work at the Hague gallery of the French art dealers, Goupil & Co.. His uncle was a partner in this firm and his younger brother Theo later worked there too.
After his dismissal from the firm, he taught briefly in England before training as an evangelist. He was appointed to the Borinage mining region but in 1879 this appointment was not renewed, during his time in the region, he did some soul-searching. He adapted his original desire to help mankind to leaving mankind "some memento in the form of drawings or paintings -- not made to please any particular movement, but to express a sincere human feeling."
