The Big Chill
The Big Chill is an interesting movie about a group of friends and their weekend together. All of the characters meet up due to the death of Alex. They all loved him and one another very much, but it was Alex committing suicide that brought them together. The main question of the film is where did Alex’s hope go? He took his own life and his best friends don’t even know why. The editing in this film is superb. The director, Lawrence Kasdan, does some wonderful things in the making of this film. He actually shows the death of Alex, without showing him dying. The cinematography in this first scene never allows you to even see the face of Alex. It shows different parts of his body being dressed in a suit. However, you don’t even know it is a dead body until you see the stitched up cuts on his wrists. The song for this scene kind of lets the viewer know that something is wrong. It says, “not much longer would you be mine.” With this the viewer knows that somebody has lost another.
