Congo then, at the dawn of a new century played a major role that has affected the turnout of our time. Much like today, the heart of Africa in the 19th century was the area of turbulent transformations that appeared in the beginning to have little to do with the First World or more developed world. But in fact in many ways, the multiple crises in the Congo had and is deeply affected the developing world then and now.

As we have entered the new millennium, the Congo is at the center once more. About two years ago, the Democratic Republic of Congo's war marked a turning point of consequence similar to King Leopold's in that area's history. As a war threatening to permanently alter Africa's political geography and regional economy, the Congo could be affecting the world again. Yet it does not seem to be making much of an impact on Western consciousness. From what we've learned from our past, we should know to make the change and put in the effort to see that the same mistake does not reoccur. Perhaps if we viewed Congo as an account of deaths foretold for us all, some more sincere efforts would be made towards the alteration of its crises.
