John Howard Griffin: This book is his diary abo
I learned many things from this story, the fact that people were really cruel to blacks in the 50's. I also realized that there was racism, before I was kind of unaware that it really did happen. I learned that it was just because the color of their skin and not the kind of person they were. I never realized how terrible some of the treatment towards them was. I learned several things from this book about The most important event in my mind is when John Howard Griffin was hitchhiking and got in the car with a white man. When he was on his way to Montgomery he got in a truck with a rather large rough looking white man. This man was a construction worker just getting off work. The man turned out to be very nice. They ate together then the man took him home to sleep. This was a very unusual event because white men in the south would usually not be so hospitable to a black man. This scene shows that not all white people are racist and cruel. That some actually doesn't care about the color differences. This story took place in the South in the 50's. It was during the time when blacks were free but were not respected by white people, the time when they were turned away from hotels and restaurants. The KKK was an active group and lynching was not unusual during this time. Martin Luther King was a huge influence speaking about the rights and equality of blacks.
