William Wallace: Robin Hood?

A detailed Summary of William Wallace: Robin Hood?

Sir William Wallace of Ellerslie is one of history's greatest heroes, but also one of its greatest enigmas. He was a shadowy figure whose edges have been blurred by myth and legend. Even the date and place of birth have been mis-stated. William Wallace, with superb generalship and tactical genius, led a country with no previous warlike tradition to triumph over the much larger, better armed, and better trained English forces.

Wallace grew up in a town called Ellerslie. When he was around seventeen years old his father was murdered right in front of him, and his older brother was killed shortly after. Englishmen killed them both. This is where William's hatred for the English began. William also had a younger brother who was believed to have been a few years after William's death , and a mother (who was not even mentioned in the movie Braveheart).

The average height of a teenage male in that period was a little over five feet tall. William was around six foot, seven inches. Because of this he was constantly harassed by English teens. When he was eighteen years old, William decided he was sick of being made fun of. When a group of four English teens came up to him and started making fun of

him and pushing him around, William took out a knife and plunged it into the young adult's heart. The other teens would soon become his next victims. A warrant was issued for his arrest, so William fled Ellerslie and moved in with one of his uncles'.

Shortly after his triumphant return to Scotland (around Christmas 1297), William Wallace received the accolade. William Wallace was elected sole Guardian of Scotland. Wallace did not care for the title, he wanted Scotland to unite together to gain their freedom from the English tyrants.
