In the written version of The Crucible Arthur Miller uses various devices to create tension e.g. mass hysteria and arguments. In the film version it was Nicholas Hynter's job to create tension on the big screen using cinematic techniques such as lighting, settings and music. In this essay I will be examining the ways in which Hynter goes about taking the tension contained in the written version of The Crucible and transforming it into tension on the screen during the opening scenes of The Crucible.

From the outset of the film Hynter creates tension by using bold writing and contrasting colours (black background & white writing) for the credits, this sets the tone for the rest of the film. As he moves into the first scene the tension is kept at a high level with the music, a slow beat during the credits which gradually builds up as we are led into the first scene. At the very beginning of the first scene we see Abbey sit bolt upright in bed, this makes the audience guess about what is going on, which raises the tension. As the first


scene develops, the audience can establish a little bit more about the film as we see the characters in 17th century period dress and the setting is in a Puritan village. Hynter then creates suspense in the audience by using quick camera shots on the feet running so the audience is eager to know what is going on. This is complimented by the lighting or lack of it as the darkness creates a mysterious atmosphere and also by the anxious looks on the faces of the girls, which leads the audience to believe they are doing something wrong. As we are led further into the first scene we are given a bit more information about what is going on; the slow release of tension was a trademark of the first 3 acts of the written version of The Crucible, we see the girls meet up in the woods, they are giggling and whispering with each other which once again leads the audience to believe that they are doing something wrong. We then see the scene in the woods from above; we can see the girls gathered around a pot, this gives a hint to the audience that witchc
