Old Man and the Sea
Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" is a simple story about an old Cuban fisherman. The main character, Santiago, goes through the most difficult struggle of his life. The story is filled with Santiago's perseverance though the hardest of times. Hemingway shows one of the greatest examples of an individual looking deep within himself to get the courage to overcome the tragedies that life presents. Hemingway uses the sea to represent life and the old man represents the individual stuck in a life or death struggle, represented by the marlin. The story starts by describing Santiago as a tough, old, lonely and unlucky fisherman. He has been fishing all his life and has the scars to prove his experience. He has goes out to sea everyday and has come back without a catch for eighty-four days. Before the dawn of the eighty-fifth day the old man goes out to sea once again to try and brake his bad luck. He decided to go out far today to try and catch a big one. After setting out his lines to the right depth he sits and waits for the big one to bite. While waiting he talks to himself and to his "brothers" of the sea, like the dolphin and the flying fish. He uses the birds to track were the fish are feeding. Finally bef
Although the story is easy to read and straightforward, there are many different interpretations of the characters and the objects in the story. This essay is my interpretation of Hemingway's story. I believe that Hemingway represented life though the sea and the individual stuck in a struggle though Santiago. "Old Man and the Sea" is an epic story about an overwhelming challenge being conquered by an individual looking deep with him to find the strength. Although the struggle was fierce and violent it wasn't a battle between good and evil, it was more about overcoming challenges and adversities though the hardest of times. Santiago is covered with scares he received from fishing. He has blotches of skin cancer on his cheeks. His hands are described as, " had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert (Hemingway, 10)." His scares are proof that he has had a hard life. The sea, life, has been hard on him. The scares represent past struggles that he had overcome in the past years. None of the scares on his hands were fresh meaning that he has not had a major struggle in a while, which means that a major conflict is about to take place. The big fish was now towing the old man. The fish towed the old man for two days. In those two days the old man incurred more scars emotionally and physically. He learned to respect the fish as one of his "brothers" too (Hemingway, 95). Finally the fish wore out and Santiago managed to real him in. He tied the marlin to the side of his skiff and set sail back home. On his way he was attacked by "
