Adolescence now & then
Many parents of teenagers in the 90's believe that their kids are growing up faster then they did. They think they are being exposed to more negative forces such as drugs, drinking and sex. Because they are faced with these problems, teenagers in the 90's must make many important decisions that determine the kind of person they will grow up to be. Many teenagers take the wrong path, giving into peer pressure or being a little too curious. Many parents may wonder how they can teach their own kids the right path to take, and the right decisions to make, without having to lock them in their rooms so they are not exposed to these bad forces. The image of adolescence in the 1950's presented in the movie Rebel Without A Cause is not much different from the image presented in the book A Tribe Apart. Sure the way the dress is drastically different, but both shows how teenager must face these decisions of what is right and wrong. Both generations are exposed to drinking, drugs and smoking. There is fighting in both also, but in the movie it shows them fighting with knives and fists, where in the book there is mention of guns being brought to school for protection. The fights are caused mainly by competition between
teens. The movie showed how competition is settled through playing chicken and racing cars off of cliffs. The book did not mention anything quite like this. This could show that teens in the 50's might have been just as "wild" as teens in the 90's. My parents were very involved in my life. My mom did not work all through my school years up until my senior year in high school, which made me always come home to a non-empty house. Both of my parents were very supportive of everything I did. They were always willing to help me with schoolwork, or just talk to me about how my day had went. I got really good grades in school because I did not want to disappoint my parents. They were a little over protective of me because I am an only child. I had a curfew and I was not allowed to go somewhere where there was drinking or no parents home. Because of this I hardly ever drank in high school, I never did any drugs either. I always had to call and tell them where I was and what time I'd be leaving. I know they did these things out of love and concern, not just to be jerks to me. I did manage to sneak out once and a while and defy them, but I always got that gut feeling that they knew when I had gone against me. They knew me too good. Teenagers in the book wanted a friend in their parents, someone to talk to about life, someone who would understand them. Many did not get this, and either turned to their friends or kept it in themselves. Some of the teenagers in the book did have great family lives. Their parents were supportive, involved in their kids' lives, loving, and always there when they were needed. These fortunate teens, were usually the ones who did well in school, and did not get into much trouble. This shows how much of effect parents actions have over how a teenager acts with their
