USMA Bicentennial Celebration

When The United States Military Academy was founded in 1802, no one could imagine the impact it would have on this nation for centuries to come. The bicentennial celebration already started when the class of 2002 entered the Corps of Cadets in 1998. In the year to come, The United States Military Academy will reach its 200th birthday. West Point will be immersed in parades, festivities, famous speakers, and old graduates. The centerpiece of West Point's bicentennial celebration should inevitably be Cullum Memorial Hall. This institution not only serves the nation as providing leaders for the Armed Forces and taking care of America's sons and daughters, it provides a service to the civilian sector as well. None of United States Military Academy's everlasting influence on the United States would have been accomplished if it were not for the valiant officers who served and now serve this country well.

At the West Point Centennial in 1902, old graduates marched to the Memorial Hall recently completed with funds provided by the estate from Major General Cullum. The hall did not official bear his name for years to come. Now, this infamous building is referred to as Cullum Memorial Hall where its walls are lined with the

History is what envelopes Cullum Memorial Hall. Without history, we cannot be inspired to serve the present. To think that I am walking through the same hallways, fields and experiencing what these honored deceased graduates have experienced. The thought awes me. I read and learn about great officers and what they have done to lead this nation to victory and success. Am I capable of doing the same? This question constantly takes over my thoughts and I wonder if I can represent what an officer exemplifies. I believe that West Point cannot teach one to become a leader; it must be already embedded in the person. What West Point can accomplish is the framework for the development of leaders of character. I believe that a have what it takes to be a leader and will devote myself to my duties of being an officer. Inherently, there will be risks involved, even my life. However, these are risks that I must be able to take as a future commissioned officer in the United States Army.

Duty is a guiding principle to commissioned officers. Professional officers always do their duty, and they are "prepared, if necessary, to lay down their own lives and the lives of their soldiers in the Nation's interest." Being an officer is the most respectful profession there is; it is worth more than the richest billionaires. The essence of life is a gift, and laying it down for the protection
