A Call for Marijuana
"Prohibition . . . goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation."Did you know the Government is denying Americans a fundamental liberty by making contact with Marijuana illegal? Marijuana is, by far, the most available and sought after illegal drug in America. As a result of Marijuana's paradoxical Illegality, the prison system is congested with dealers and owners of this fascinating plant. The result of these people's incarceration is millions of dollars spent to fight the war against Marijuana. This is an unfounded and unnecessary war. The book, The Culture of Fear: Why Americans are Afraid of the Wrong Things, thoroughly explains the ways in which the media and industries can warp statistics, statements, and essentially truth, to serve themselves. Those incarcerated, for the possession and dealing of Marijuana, are inadvertently victims of the traditional prohibition of, and governmental propaganda against the drug. Modern American propaganda against Marijuana use, by the government, is the reason for the wasting of our tax dollars to punish those practicing the same ideals our government preaches. The promise of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit
In a world of legalized Marijuana, both the Government and the public would prosper. Tax revenue from the sale of marijuana would allow for the Government to reap benefits, while the common Marijuana smoker could essentially smoke without the fear of getting caught. There would be a distinct wall between the drug dealer and the pot dealer, and the load of the war against drugs would be considerably more bearable. The load taken off the prison system would allow for the extra funding to be put into more important programs, like education and healthcare reform. The tradition of Marijuana prohibition has hindered our culture both socially and spiritually, and has as of recent become an economic burden as well. It is time for a change. The government and research foundations cite health problems as well. The only true long-term problem Marijuana causes is lung damage, just as that of another legal drug called tobacco. It is a simple fact that all smoke damages lungs. The eating of Marijuana can solve this problem. One argument brought up is that it is a gateway drug. In this sense, "experts" believe that this drug leads to more harmful and addictive drugs. So the question must be asked; does Marijuana lead to harder drugs? In any sense, no it doesn't. Although people who abuse drugs often smoke marijuana also, the National Academy of Science reports that "legal drugs for adults, such as alcohol and tobacco, ... precede the use of all illicit drugs." In other words, tobacco and alcohol are the gateway drugs in America, not Marijuana. Other questions could be brought up such as, does Marijuana lead
