Malcolm X: Changes in Attitude
Malcolm X was born as Malcolm Little on May 19th, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His parents were Earl and Louise Little. His father was a Baptist preacher and laborer. He believed that the black-an would never be equal in the U.S., and that they should leave and go back to Africa. Malcolm was his favorite child, 5th of 7, because he had the lightest skin. Earl felt that the lighter your skin color, the better off in life you were. Malcolm's mother was the complete opposite. Malcolm was her least favorite due to his light skin. She was half-white because a white man raped her mother, so she hated seeing t he light skin. The KKK was after Earl because they felt he didn't know his place. This caused the Family to move to East Lansing, Michigan. Malcolm was not fond of whites at this point for two major reasons: The fact that his grandmother was raped by a white-man, and also 4 of Earl's brothers were died by violence, 3 of which were killed by whites. A white supremacist group called the Black Legion was after Earl for being out of his place. In 1931 the same group eventually killed him; Malcolm was 6. The family was well off at first, as Earl had two life-insurance policies. The smaller policy paid up
Malcolm X's path changed many times during his life. He went from a good student, to a criminal, to a reformed Muslim, to a racist, and then realized that blacks are not superior according to the Koran. right away, but the larger one said that it was suicide, in an attempt to not pay the policy. Louise Little never recovered from her husband's murder. She went crazy and was walking around town talking to herself. She was sent to a mental institution where she would spend the next 26 years. Welfare people were sent in to find places for Malcolm and his siblings to live, causing them to be separated. Because of this Malcolm hates whites even more. Malcolm liked southern white more than northern whites, saying that southern ones spoke their minds, while northern whites were all hypocrites. He disliked Martin Luther King Jr. and thought of the March on Washington as a collection of speeches that would result in nothing being done. He called it the Farce on Washington. In 1963 Malcolm hears confirmation of the rumors that Elijah was having affairs with 3 of his secretaries. He put the secretaries in isolation for a few months, and went to see Elijah in Phoenix. Elijah tells Malcolm that he thinks of himself like King David or King Solomon, who both had many wives. Malcolm is disappointed with Elijah, and gets the secretaries to file paternity suits. After President Kennedy is assassinated, Elijah tells everyone not to comment, but Malcolm tells a reporter after being asked his opinion, that the "chickens have come home to roost". After this Elijah takes away Malcolm's power to speak in public for a while. It was there that Malcolm met "Shorty", a man who was 10 years older than Malcolm. He was also
