Manson, Charles

The call came in at 8:33 AM on Saturday, August 9, 1969. Five murders and three yet to be discovered. Who stands responsible for these deaths? None other than Charles Milles Manson. Not only did he manage to pull off these seven murders but has admitted to somewhere around thirty-five additional others.

Manson was born to Kathleen Maddox on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kathleen was a sixteen-year-old prostitute who married a man long enough for Charles to acquire the last name Manson. (Internet, 7) Kathleen Maddox didn't want the burden of a son and tried to send him off to a number of different reforming schools and juvenile centers. Manson fled in stolen cars and was then arrested for crossing state lines in hot cars.

Kathleen Maddox was sentenced five years in prison for robbing a back and Charles was sent to live with his religious aunt and sadistic uncle. (Internet, 7) His uncle made Manson wear dresses to school in order to make him "more of a man." Charles was also raped numerous times by his uncle. (Dolan, p. 38)

Manson was on the streets by the age of ten, making a living by stealing. (Dolan, p.38) He was arrested various times on several accounts, one being grand theft (auto). During his first sentence

Jay Sebring was the next to die. He was found on the floor next to Sharon Tate's body, a rope tied to both of their necks. He was stabbed seven times and shot once. A towel was wrapped around his head covering his face.

Many psychologists have been able to study the way Manson thinks and this may help with crimes in the future. Criminals like Manson often look at other humans as another different species. (Angus, p. 769) Although the motives for Manson's murders remain a mystery, psychological motivation is often found in one man's dominance over another. (Angus, p. 647) Manson considered the Tate-LaBianca trail a "game" in which he was being judged by a society unworthy and incapable of understanding him. (Knappman, p. 593)

After the Tate murders, Manson and the rest of his family ironically fled to Death Valley but were arrested in late 1969. (Claitor, p. 46) The trail lasted nine and a half months, from June 15, 1970-March 29, 1971. (Knappman, p. 591) During the trial, Manson branded an X on his forehead to symbolize being an outcast. "I have X-ed myself from your world, " he quoted. (Angus, p. 784) His followers did the same. Manson almost got Atkins, Krenwinkle, and Van Houten to admit they were responsible for the murders and declare their "master" innocent so he could tell the world of his divine "mission". (Angus, p. 789)

Charles Manson was tried guilty on all charges, as well as the three girls. Charles was sentenced to Death Row, but with the abolishment of the death sentence in California, his sentence was changed to life in prison. (Bugliosi, p. 384) He is now kept in maximum-security Corcoran State Prison in California. (Claitor, p. 47)

Manson saw himself as a messiah. He believed that he was the creator of a new way of life. Charles thought that the Beatles spoke to him from "across the ocean." The song "Helter Skelter" was misconcepted as blacks uprising against whites. Manson believed he could escape it by leading his followers into the California desert to exist in a paradise of sex and drugs. (Angus, p. 785) Manson expected th
