Much Ado Abouut Nothing
Shakespeares presentation of Beatrice and Benedick at the end of the play contrasts in many ways to the earlier appearances of the two characters. For example they both still have thei continuos banters with each other and also a false image which they live upto in public. However in Act5scene4 we witness changes that have occured in both charcters and it can be argued whether the two characters will ever recover their original sense of vitality. This essay will look at how Shakespaere presents the two characters at the end of the play. Although many changes have occurred, there arestill many things which are typical of Beatrice and Benedick. This can be shown by looking at ythe structure of language which is often echoed, Bene"They swore that you were almost sick for me" Beat"They swore that you were nigh dead for me" Both of them quickly pick up on each others words and images, almost as if we havea constant repartee between the two characters. This is a feature which is present throughout the play, for example
"Dost thou think I care for a satire or an epigram" This could also be used as an example of the word-war, which is also highly characteristic of the language used by Beatrice and Benedick, for example-Act1 Scene1: "Bull Jove, sir had an amiable low......Much like to you, for you have just his bleat" He actually wants a wife which is one of the biggest changes, especially considering that previously he was a, They are enjoying themselves at the end of the play, but we do not know what tomorrow is going to bring. What also strikes us at the is that Beatrice says very little at the end which is very unusual as she always has lots to say, and is admired for it. Her quiteness may suggest that she has now taken on the conventional role-which she has by marrying Benedick. Also the play ends before a marriage maybe suggesting that the are enjoying the freedom before marriage, as marriage is an order in itself presccribed by God.
