The film "With Honors" is a clever film in which five characters collide and are transformed, left with loses and gains, all for the better. Four of our characters are Harvard University seniors, desperately trying to write their final theses. The fifth character, a bum, a man who left his family to live on the streets, fighting a lung disease in the cold northern weather. This is a strange scenario, having four young students just heading out into the world and one man on his way out of it.
Our characters, Jeff, Monty, Everett, and Courtney are all strangers to forgiveness and expressing their emotions without a mask to hide behind . Jeff is so wound up in his mothers concerns that he has no identity. He feels the way Simon looks because he is aware of his lack of character. Courtney has her sex life to hide behind, Monty uses his thesis, and Everett has alcohol. Simon enters the
Papers on this film and this topic could be written in various ways, I am going to mainly write about Monty and Simon. Monty changes a lot in this film, as do all the characters, in the beginning he despises Simon, only enduring his presence in order to re-obtain his upside down thesis. Through sessions of understanding Monty changes into a caring individual who gives Simon a home, relates to him, respects him, and sets him at a higher level than his own life, his thesis. This change initially takes place when Monty goes out of his way and brings a blanket to Simon who is sleeping outside in a broken down van. When this occurs Monty and Simon begin to break the barrier of "the Deal." After this occurrence they begin to talk about their views of life, Monty's right wing view and Simons memory based view of life. Slowly but surely Monty is set free, he realizes that he must be his own person and expres
