There was Holly, on her back, naked in the middle of the floor, her heels touching the border of the Turkish rug. Up on the twentieth floor it was cooler than down in the street. The phone rang; she got up and covered herself with a bathrobe. It was 6:30 in the morning; she picked up the phone still drowsy since being jerked from her deep sleep "Hello?" she mumbled.
"Colonel?" asked a deep and alert voice.
"General Bailey?" she inquired rather surprised.
"We have a situation get down here ASAP, Colonel," demanded the general,
Colonel Holly Parsons was the head of research at the United States Army Medical Institute for Research of Infectious Diseases (also known as RIID) in Aspen Hill, Maryland. She conducted research on the world's deadliest viruses in one of the two only institutes in the country equipped to do so, the other being the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. It was 6:45 and she knew she had to get moving so she jumped in the shower, got dressed and was out the door by 7:00. She stopped for coffee to complete the awakening process and to get her prepped for the long drive from her apartment in the city to the institute in the country. She walked into her office, sat down and the phone rang. "Hello?" she asked.
"There's been a strange death, Colonel," replied Bailey.
She was sent to Delaware immediately in an air force jet complete with portable space suit and a high-tech monkey trap. At this point she knew of only 3 monkeys that had survived the so-called outbreak, she would get all three, kill them and get what stopped them from being affected by the disease. She arrived in Delaware and was escorted to the Marshallton facility, a pharmaceutical institute that used monkeys for testing. She walked in space suit and trap; the three monkeys were in the corner screaming. She set the trap and waited. Finally the monkeys fell for the bait she grabbed the trap and flew back to Maryland knowing that she had saved the human race, but for how long?
She waited for the gates to open and drove in. She placed her thumb on the fingerprint scanner and reported to General Bailey's office.
