Throughout the novel "The Natural", the author, Bernard Malamud, describes manyimportant events which lead to the making of a hero. Although the many connections and relationships which are established in the story are often changing, each of them has a major impact on the life of the main character. Roy Hobbs has many romantic feelings for different females at many points in the novel which often cause changes in his life and career. There are three women, each of whom are major influences on the life of Roy, which he finds himself in various relationships with throughout the novel. One of the crucial heartbreaking relationships which Roy Hobbs experiences in the story, is with a lady with "heartbreaking legs" by the name of Harriet Bird. As they begin to generate loving feelings for each other, everything goes well between them. Harriet often expresses her love for Roy openly.
