Wright Brothers

In the Twentieth Century, there have been many great men who have done many great things. From Einstein to Ford: these inventors have really pushed the limits of our society and science. However, these men never would have had the possibility to be in the sky if it weren't for two amazing men. Orville and Wilbur Wright are the brothers that gave us the dream-come-true for man to fly. In their own right, the Wright Brothers were brilliant men, who paved the way for the current appreciation for aeronautical sciences.

When they were little boys, their father was away on business most of the time. When he did come home, he would bring home gadgets and toys for his boys to play with. One time, Mr. Wright brought home a toy helicopter, one that is thrown up in the air then flutters down. After playing with it for about an hour, the Wright boys took it apart and figured out how it worked. Shortly thereafter, they made their own little helicopter toys, using the one they received as a gift as the model. Because of this, their father greatly encouraged pursuit of their interests.

Neither of the boys finished High School, but instead dropped out to start their own printing firm. This was moderately successful, so they decided t

Later on in life, the Wright Brothers became enthused with the sport of cycling. This prompted them to open up their own bicycle shop called the "Wright Cycle Exchange"(Walsh, 103) to help repair their own bicycles and the bicycles of their friends. After dealing with top of the line bicycles for quite a while, they thought about making their own bicycle. Made from parts of other decent bikes and some of their own designs, the Wright Brothers constructed the "Van Cleve": a bicycle with both of the wheels the same size, which made it much easier and safer to ride. This was a large success, and the brothers made a great sum of money in the bicycle business and changed the name of the shop to "Wright Cycle Exchange."

Orville returned on December 11, 1903 with the new shafts. The next day, the aeroplane was ready for a test flight, but the wind was too light. On Sunday the 13th, The brothers laid the track out for the monorail launching system on the side of Kill Devil Hill, but didn't launch the plane because of the wind. The Wrights were ready for the launching of the plane for quite awhile, both in their calculations and glides. For another four days, they didn't launch the plane, because of complications with the weather or parts.

This time, the brothers tested the "lift coefficient" that was supplied by Smeaton, and found that it was not as accurate as originally believed. With this information, the brothers found the reason that Lilienthal had died when he tried to launch himself. Through calculations, not field tests, the Wrights found that the idea of flying a powered, heavier than air manned craft was a feasible idea. The first problem was developing a propeller that would produce the needed thrust, and still be light and flexible enough not to damage or be damaged by the engine. They went through many designs and manufacturers before they decided to use their own design and materials. The Brothers drafted a blueprint, and gave it to a metal worker who developed a new kind of tubular steel propeller. This was a difficult job at first, because not much was known about propellers n air. All the calculations that were done were with nautical propeller tables. That is, propellers that are used underwater. The Wrights just substituted the water resistance with air resistance. With the development of the propellers, the Brothers were ready to move onto the most important part, the engine itself.

On September 25, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright arrived at Kitty
