Kemal Ataturks Role In the Independence of Turkey And Afterwards

Kemal Ataturk was allowed to drastically alter the way of life in Turkey because he saved it from being ruled by the Europeans. He created the independent Nation of Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so he won the hearts of the Turkish People. He was responsible to attempt to change the country from a backward, Islamic nation into a modern "Western Nation."

At the beginning of this century Turkey did not exist instead the Ottoman Empire ruled the area that would become Turkey. The Empire was once a powerful nation, but its power had dwindled and it became corrupt and under the influence of European Powers. The Europeans had wanted this land because it was linking Asia and Europe. Many wars had been fought over the Ottoman Empire, such as the Crimean War that would have been the Ottoman Empire's defeat had the British and French intervened and saved the country from the Russia. For it's weakness it had been named "The Sick Man Of Europe."

Though the allies had dissolved the parliament, Ataturk set up a new parliament in Ankara that elected him as president of Turkey in 1920. After this, Kemal Ataturk set out to drive the invaders out of his country. He was attacked by the allies to put and end to his rule but they were unsuccessful in driving him out of Anatolia. During this time, the Sultan was to sign the Treaty of Sevres. It left the Turks with only Anatolia and the Allies took the rest of the Ottoman Empire.

The name Atuturk which he gave himself meant the father of the Turks. Kemal Ataturk died in 1938. He deserved the recognition he gave himself because of what he did for his country.

Although Britain, France and Italy had already divided the Empire amongst themselves, the nationalistic movement caused them to abandon the lands. This left the Greeks as the only occupying force.

When World War I broke out, the Young Turks were led by Enver Pasha. He was a the Minister of War and has been described as one of the most inept generals in the twentieth century. Although at first Turkey decided to be neutral, Enver Pasha persuaded the government to fight on the side of the Central Powers. This was a poor decision because the Ottoman army was poorly equipped and supplied to fight against Britain, France and Russia.
