Kemal Ataturks Role In the Independence of Turkey And Afterwards

Kemal Ataturk was allowed to drastically alter the way of life in Turkey because he saved it from being ruled by the Europeans. He created the independent Nation of Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so he won the hearts of the Turkish People. He was responsible to attempt to change the country from a backward, Islamic nation into a modern "Western Nation."

At the beginning of this century Turkey did not exist instead the Ottoman Empire ruled the area that would become Turkey. The Empire was once a powerful nation, but its power had dwindled and it became corrupt and under the influence of European Powers. The Europeans had wanted this land because it was linking Asia and Europe. Many wars had been fought over the Ottoman Empire, such as the Crimean War that would have been the Ottoman Empire's defeat had the British and French intervened and saved the country from the Russia. For it's weakness it had been named "The Sick Man Of Europe."
