Ku Klux Klan 4

Ku Klux Klan. Everyone has probably heard of this southern, white oriented racist group that thrived in the earlier half of the century but is still alive today in our country. The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a social club by a group of Confederate army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee around 1865. A Confederate general by the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest was that Klan's first leader. He took the title of "Grand Wizard". The group adopted their name, Ku Klux Klan, from the Greek word kuklos, meaning circle, and the English word clan.

What the Ku Klux Klan stood for. The Klan stood for superiority of the white race. This was the philosophy of the Klan and they would often exercise this philosophy with the use of and ization of blacks. The Klan detested the idea of blacks gaining any rights following the Civil War into the Reconstruction. They again ized blacks to prevent them from voting in elections or practicing any other right. Black and white people who sympathized the Klan were threatened, beaten, and even ed by Klan members of the south. This led to the Klan adopting the symbolic white robe and hood to mask their identity.

I think that because of the existence of the Klan in southern states that the way whites and blacks treat each other is going to be different from down there and up in northern states. This is only my opinion, so do not treat it as fact. Of course I know some people will object to this, and I know not all of it is true, but I have experienced things like this personally.

The Klan was then given the name "Invisible Empire", and from here on it grew and spread rapidly amongst the south. Soon after, the Force Bill, passed by Congress in 1871, gave the President authority to use Federal troops against the Klan if deemed necessary. This all but led to the disappearance of the Klan.

think that it is a form of reverse discrimination against the white race. The situation is that it gives any race that is non-white extra consideration when dealing with schooling and jobs. I don't think that is fair. With the way society is so competitive, and how everyone seems to be striving for equal rights, I think Affirmative Action should be dealt away with. Everyone should be looked upon as equal, and you should have to work your way above others. Another objective that I somewhat supported was the one dealing with welfare. I don't think it's possible to test everyone on welfare, and it would probably cost thousands of tax dollars to do that anyway. I also agree with the "workfare, not welfare" ideology. I think that if the government is giving checks to people they should also be giving back to society. I know there are exceptions and I totally understand that point of view. But if people are not working at all simply because they choose not to, I can't understand why the government should have to give them a check. The least they could do is volunteer to help out society. But the fact of the matter remains that for the most part I think the Ku Klux Klan is a bad organization. There have been so many tragedies where blacks have been beaten, ized and even ed. I've read stories of black men being dragged out of hospital beds, set on fire, and dragged around the city for people to see. I've also read stories where hundreds of blacks were ed and then their bodies thrown into a river. It just goes to show how racist and violent the Ku Klux Klan really is.

After reading over the list of the Klan's objectives I found out that I don't disagree with everything. The one that stands out the most is Affirmative Action. I also

A former Methodist preacher by the name of William J. Simmons organized a new Klan in Stone Mountain Georgia in 1915 as a patriotic, Protestant fraternal society.

Racism is never going to be abolished as long as there are people of
