Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte Bronte was born in Thornton in the West Riding of Yorkshire on April 21,1816, the third child of Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell Bronte. The major event of her young life was the death of her mother in 1821, which created a lot of chaos.

Jane Eyre was published in 1847; it was a success, but was followed up by a tragedy. In September 1848, her brother Branwell died, probably due to heavy drinking; this was closely followed by the death of her sister Emily from consumption in December 1848 and her sister Anne's death of the same disease in May 1849.

Charlotte's grief is plain in her novel Shirley, which she had been working on when all the death started.

In 1824, when their mother died, Charlotte and Emily were sent to join their older sisters Maria and Elizabe


After the death of her two sisters, Charlotte and her siblings created the imaginary kingdoms of Angria and Gondal, which they chronicled into poems, stories, and plays. The children created fantasy worlds whose doings they recorded in miniature script on tiny sheets of paper. Anne and Emily devised the realistic kingdom of Gondal, while Charlotte and Branwell created the realm of Angria, which was dominated by the Duke of Zamorna. Zamorna was proud and powerful. He ruled by strength of will and feeling and easily conquered women, who recognized the evil in him but were drawn to him by their own passion. Rochester was her version of the Angrian Duke of Zamorna.
