The Media: How it Shaped Me
There are many things in this world that make up our identity; that make us the people we are today. Some of these things include school, work, and relationships. Some people don't think that media can play a role in shaping us, however, it does. Things like music, books, the internet and television can help form a person's identity; these things have for me. Music has helped me find my true self for many years. I love to sit and analyze the lyrics of songs. When you do this, you really find something in you that you probably have never found before. Not just listening to the songs, but sitting down and reading the lyrics. Growing up in the 80's and 90's, the music didn't give the world a lot of hope. I grew up with country music since my mother and father are big country people. I was listening to Willie Nelson and Conway Twitty for as long as I can remember. As I continued on my journey through country music, I listened to songs and read lyrics that I realized effected me in some way shape or form. Some songs I feel I can relate to are "Here We Go" by Pat Green, "If I Were King" by Robert Earl Keen, and "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn, In the song "Here We Go," Pat Green sings of his time here in Lubbock. In general, the media can shape anyone's life. It does not matter what kind of media there is in your life, in one way or another, it will make you a different person. Reading a book and seeing how the author made two people fall in love may make you look at falling in love in that way. Every type of media can change you; you just have to go out and seek the media in order to understand that it will changed you. Television also played a huge role in my life. The shows I watched after school made me want to be more and more like the people on them. I would watch "Leave it to Beaver," and I always wanted to have the perfect life like they did. They had the perfect little family with the perfect little life. Beaver could be a bad kid, but his parents never hit him or yelled at him in a hateful way. The show showed the world what a perfect family was like. I also watched "Saved By the Bell," and this is what I expected High School to be like. From watching the show, I assumed that I was going to be in a little group as well. I wanted so badly to be like Kelly. She was pretty and popular. She always got the guys, but she was also an airhead. However, I used to also want to be like Jesse. She was the good student. Jesse taught me that school was very important and getting into a good college was another important factor of life.
