In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, there is a lot of cruelty and unfairness to other characters. Well one in particular would be Piggy. Golding gives piggy certain traits that make him a good target for abuse. These traits can be found in people today that have the same problems. The main irony in this is that Piggy has all the useful ideas but because of his physical and mental abnormalities cause him to be abused. The main question, which we will be discussing, is why people are treated this way and how this issue is present in today's society.
Piggy was a short fat kid who is continually being teased. It started off right in the beginning. At first Ralph didn't even want to know his name, and then he heard that the kids at his school used to call him piggy and Ralph burst into laughter. Even when Ralph promised not to tell the others about his name, he went ahead and told them anyway. They all thought that it was funny that a kid was called piggy. They made fun of him just because he tried to be friendly and he didn't look like the others. For example when Ralph and Piggy realize that they are on an island alone with no adults Piggy says, "I expect we'll want to know all there names, and ma
ke a list. We ought to have a meeting." (Pg. 11) But Ralph just ignored him and didn't care what he had to say. Piggy tried to give some thoughtful input to help them organize the situation but Ralph didn't care. This happens throughout the novel and makes Piggy feel really bad. Again when piggy wanted to go up the mountain, Ralph told him that he wasn't in shape and that he couldn't make it so he just staid with all the other boys.
If you get anything out of this book at all try to look past the island and survival, and look how society interacts with each other. Try not to be discriminate on looks or physical stature and look to see the intellectual portion. You don't need to be friends with the "nerds" but just don't be mean to them. They have just as much of a life as you do. It isn't worth more or less than yours, but they are equal. Next time you see a kid being picked on by a big dumb bully stand up for them because often they can't do it for themselves, especially when the are outnumbered.
Golding is trying to show how people don't care about others feelings and how they just walk all over others. It happens in the book to Piggy who is a fat kid who wears g
