The main character in Catch-22 is a man by the man of Yossarian. He is a bombardier in the Air Force during World War II. Catch-22 is the story of how Yossarian goes crazy, but can't get out of the Air Force because of catch-22. Catch-22 says that the Air Force can't ground anyone on the basis of insanity unless they ask to be grounded, but if anyone asks to be grounded they must be sane.
The story starts with Yossarian in the hospital. He has a condition that isn't quite jaundice. He really isn't sick, but would rather spend his time in the hospital than in the war. In conclusion, Yossarian is disheartened by the war and is upset about the unfairness of mortality. He doesn't understand how fate can choose who lives and who dies. He believes that the only sane people in war are not those who are fighting for their country, but those who are fighting for their lives.
