There's a very fine line when comparing the two sexes in this world, male and female. Both these sexes are so similar, yet they are both vastly different from one another. Many intriguing questions are brought up when dealing with the differences between the two sexes. In men and women, there exist many obvious differences that have tendency to sometimes overshadow some similarities. Thousands of questions cross our minds when we think about the other gender. However, one focal question remains; is there a way of knowing certain things depending on one's gender? Scientifically, it has been proven that there are differences between males and females; largely due to the contrasting physical structures of each gender, as well as a difference in hormone levels, such as the brain. Studies have also shown that a considerable number of differences from gender to gender have come from been influenced from outside sources such as, society, family and the media. However, gender roles nowadays seem to be merging together somewhat, resulting in the fine line between the two becoming thinner. Will we soon be living in a genderless society with only one sex? Media Imagery has changed only slightly, with men predominantly portrayed as workers and women as sex objects. These stereotypes are throughout the decades, presented starting at childhood, and they instill the notion of traditional gender roles is instilled and quickly understood (Welch et.al 1979,202). Commercials do not reflect the modern woman; even in an age when equality is suppose to prevail. Advertisements on television tend to portray men in stereotypical roles of authority and patriarchal dominance, while women are associated with traditional roles, for example, that of the housewife. Females are shown maintaining the perfect household, with their primary goal being to take care of their husbands and or families. Housewives are often seen as happy to serve others and to relinquish their spare time and personal needs; all in an effort to insure that their families feel loved and cared for. As well, the use of skinny young models in these advertisements also sets forth a view of what the ideal woman should be, a standard most women cannot live up to. This gives rise to the notion that negative stereotypes are unconsciously internalized while viewing these commercials, for example the concept that males should hold dominant authority. Typically women are portrayed as sex objects; therefore these advertisements are aimed at men. These types of commercials are only shown for there sex appeal in an effort to catch the males' eye. This depiction of perfect form can be extremely departmental once internalized, as both men and women strive to see themselves in this model of perfection. Media and mostly commercials on television tend to portray stereotypical roles of gender. The effect of television imagery can be particularly consequential in modern industrial societies like Canada and the United States. These images do not create an accurate image of the modern woman, often demeaning their role in society.
