BACKGROUND: Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Paris in 1808. Most of his childhood was spent in exile. His mother, like all Bonapartes, were banished from France after the fall of Napoleon I. They eventually found a place in Switzerland. He was well educated to the dual heritage of the French revolution and was inspired by his mother to retain his lost fatherland. Once his uncle and the Duke of Reichstadt died, he became the head of the Bonaparte family. In 1836, he attempted his first coup d'etat against the French government. It failed and he was exiled to the US and then, after his mother's death, to London. In 1840 he tried once more but failed and this time was sentenced to imprisonment for life. But in 1846 he managed to escape to England. Once Louis-Phillipe was overthrown in the French Revolution in 1848 and the second republic was formed, Napolean III saw his chance and was elected president to a four year term with no immediate reelection allowed.
