Life of Adolf Myers

It's a beautiful day. The sun is out, birds are chirping, children are playing down by the river. The air smells so clean. The cows and horses are in the pasture. What more can a person want? Everybody seems happy, except for me. Hello, my name is Adolf Myers, son of Albert Myers. My family is pretty complex. My mother's name is Mary Ann Dubeaux. My father died at the age of 40. It was a tragic day for me, especially my mother. Pops died of a massive heart attack, while he was working in the fields. He was a simple man. Pops would wake up at 5:00 a.m. every morning. My mother always had breakfast prepared for him. Scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes are what he would eat. He would tend the fields until 4:00 p.m. That's when my mother would ring the bell for dinner. We would often race to the house; the loser had to help mom wash the dishes after dinner. After Pops's death, my mother had a hard time supporting us. She eventually remarried. Sir Francis Dubeaux was his name. Mother seemed happy when she met him. But, I knew deep down inside she was still mourning Pops's death. He journeyed to America in search of a better life. Mr. Dubeaux was a merchant in Paris, France. The busin

He presented himself as a gentleman to my mom and to the villagers. But, a month or so into the marriage, he showed his true identity. He would constantly beat my mother. One little mistake she committed would result in a beating. My mother would try to satisfy him, but nothing satisfied him. As for me, what could I do I was merely 10 years old. I too would get beatings, for not doing my chores to perfection. "Nobody is perfect," I would think sometimes. I couldn't rebel against him. He was too powerful. I wanted to kill myself sometimes. When his family would come to visit, my step cousins tormented me. They would tell me I was the outcast of the family. They would call me names, throw stones at me. I would fight back sometimes. But, when I did I would get in trouble for it. It was my word against theirs. They were Mr. Dubeaux's pride and joy. This went on for years. Finally, when I was about 15 years old I did the unthinkable. This is how it happened, "It was just after 5:00 p.m., my mother was set
