The Great Gatzby

The Great Gatsby is a story, told through an observer, about a man's trials and tribulations who tries to regain what he had in the past. The whole focus of the story is on Gatsby's dream, his desire to rekindle the flames of a previous fire. Daisy, the fire, is along for the ride. A ride that contains many twists and turns that only lead to corruption.

Nick, the narrator of the story, has just moved from the Midwest to New York. Knowing that Nick is the narrator, it is important to realize that some of the things he says or feels could be swayed by his own emotions. Also living in New York and near to Nick's house is the Buchanans. Tom Buchanan is an acquaintance from Nick's days in college and Daisy is Nick's cousin. Nick's move is going very smoothly and his cousin is getting him used to the high-class lifestyle. Being from a middle class society Nick, at times, enjoys the elegant parties that are thrown almost every day. At Daisy's house is where Nick is informed about Tom's affair. Jordan, Daisy's friend, catches Nick up on the latest gossip and hopes Nick would be able to help the situation. Jordan also asks about Nick's neighbor, Gatsby, whom he has not yet met but decides to later on.

It's teatime and Gatsby is trying his hardest to make the night go as planned. He even arrived after Daisy to make it look like he was not expecting her. Nick realizes the moment and decides to leave the two alone. Little is known of the conversation that took place but it is obvious that sparks were flying and the fire was lit. The spark that lighted Daisy's fire was when she realized how much money Gatsby had. In their previous relationship, Gatsby was too poor for Daisy. Their relationship was true until she found the millionaire Tom Buchanan. From then on Daisy was all about money and in order for Gatsby to have a chance with Daisy he would have to flaunt his mysterious wealth.

One afternoon Tom invites Nick out for an evening in the city. This is when Nick realizes the severity and the careless nature of the affair. Along the way they pick up Myrtle, Tom's second lover, and head off to another party. At the party we find out that Tom and Daisy's relationship is not going to last.

Not satisfied with the information he received during their short conversation, Nick returns to another party at Gatsby's. Parties are usually held, to flaunt the host's wealth. We do not know where Gatsby's income is coming from but Gatsby is obviously trying to build up a reputation. With his Sherlock Holmes investigative skills, Nick finally hears the spill about Daisy and Gatsby's previous relationship. He finds out that it is not a coincidence that Gatsby lives by him and he lives near
