benito

Benito Mussolini, the great fascist dictator of Italy during World War II was a leader people changed their views on. Benito Mussolini was a leader that people changed their feelings from love to hate in a matter of no time at all. Benito Mussolini rise and fall of power happened in a sequence of lousing power from alliances than his own people.

Ben (short for Benito) founded the Fasci di Combattimento on March of 1919. "This was a nationalistic, anti liberal, and anti socialist movement. This movement attracted mainly the lower class." (1). Fascism was spreading across Europe. Ben was winning sympathy from king Victor Emmanuel III. Ben with the support of his party threatened to march on Rome. This persuaded King Victor Emmanuel III to invite Mussolini to join a coalition, which strongly helped Ben gain more power. This was Ben's first step to his rise of power.

With so much power that Ben had and his country at his back he started to do things similar to what Hitler was doing. Ben brought Austria on Germany's side by a formal alliance. "In 1937, he accepted a German alliance. The name of this alliance was the Anti Comntern Pact. On April 13, 1937 Benito Mussolini annexed Albania. He then told the British ambass

ador that no even the bribe of France and North Africa would keep him neutral." (2). The British ambassador was appalled and dismayed. This part of his political career helped his rise to more power.

The morning after Mussolini and his mistress were slain, the partisans dumped their bodies in front of a garage in Milan's puzzle Laureate. The following day Mussolini was buried in the family tomb in Pedappo.

Mussolini died on a clear spring day of April 1945. Mussolini attempted to flee to Austria. Near the town of Dongo his truck convoy was ambushed by partisans. Mussolini was dressed like a soldier but his leather boots gave him away. The partisans took him to a farmhouse. His mistress, Claretta Petacci, then joined him. The next day the communist partisan drove both Claretta Petacci and Benito Mussolini to a near by villa. He ordered them both out of the car and held a machine gun to their guilty as sin faces. This gun jammed but he got another one and quickly shot at Claretta Petacci and killed her instantly. Mussolini holding back the lapels of his jacket said "Shoot me in the chest." The partisan shot him twice in the chest.

After Ben's escape Hitler backed him to go and restore his power in Italy. Hitler debated with leaders of Italy saying that only a strong fascist government in northern Italy could save the Italian people, and Mussolini was the leader that could do it. Hitler was also mad at Ben he said, "the Duce, whom I have once greatly admired, seemed a far smaller man than before." After Mussolini agreed to be ruler again. Hitler tried and executed all the members who vo
