Daniel Webster was brought into this world on the 18th day of January in the year 1782 in the valley of the Merrimack, near the middle of New Hampshire. He was son of a farmer and never really lacked attention while he was growing up. Webster demonstrated startling powers of assimilation and retention even as a child. He received the best of his early education from newspapers, his mother's bible, political gossip throughout the town and listening to his father's fascinating tales of great men and their battles. Webster graduated from Dartmouth college in 1801 and shortly after, in 1807 he opened a legal practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after a legal apprenticeship.

Daniel was a leading lawyer, a wonderful orator, a father, husband, and statesmen. In 1812 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives due to his opposition to the war of 1812. In 1820 Webster believed that protective tarrifs would multiply the dangerous proletariat, and he was strongly opposed to them. A few years later in 1823 Webster returned to congress from Boston, and in 1824 he met the irrepressible tarrif advocates again and battled with their greatest successor, Henry Clay. In 1827 Webster was elected senator from Massachusetts. The six years ahead of him were going to stand out about all of his honors in the never-ending tourney of political debate. Unfortunately, the mother of his four children who had always commended his success and encouraged him, was not going to share his glory in the years ahead.

In the late presidential campaign of Jackson against Clay, Daniel was all for Henry Clay's candidacy and his economic program, but a few weeks later he changed his standing a little and wholeheartedly sided with Andrew Jackson. In 1836 Webster really changed his status and decided to run for president as one of the three Whig Party candidates, but he lost. Fortunately, in 1841 the Whigs could look ahead with a positive attitude and four years in power. President Harrison named Webster secretary of state and his death (Harrison) brought John Tyler to the presidency. Webster had high hopes of becoming president, therefor Webster and Clay had some what of a rivalry over Webster's aspirations and the party's program.

Daniel Webster had one quality that comes to my mind when I think of something that hindered his career, but at times this characteristic could have helped him. The quality that comes to mind is arrogance. This hindered him when he was running for presidential office because he wanted so badly to be the president, yet he did not see a need in being any ones friend. This quality could have helped Webster by making him come off to people like he had wonderful self confidence and that he was ver sure of h
