The Cold War
The cold war was a state of political tension and military rivalry existing between the Soviet and American blocs of nations following World War II, stopping short of an actual full-scale war. The Cold War lasted from the rise of the Iron Curtain in 1946 to the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991. "There are now two great nations in the world, which starting from different points, seem to be advancing toward the same goal: the Russians and the Anglo-Americans.... Each seems called by some secret design of Providence one day to hold in its hands the destinies of half the world ". These two nations threatened the existence of the human specie by trying to outsmart one another to prove who is the best.As World War II came to an end, the three-mega powers took it upon themselves to control Europe. These were England, U.S.S.R and U.S.A. Winston Churchill, Josef Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt led them respectively. The Cold war extended into space when in the Kennedy administration the U.S and The Soviet Union took their battle of the super powers to the sky. The Soviet Union started off by putting their Sputnik into space. Shortly after a man named Yury Gargaran was the first to orbit Earth on April 12, 1961. Kennedy promised that with his new Apollo program we would land a man on the moon "before the decade is out". America bounced back by making Neil Armstrong the first man to walk on the moon. Ironically the pressure on both to end up first gave rise to extreme technological progress and advances, which sad to say would of never, happened if it was not for the Cold War. To clarify the hate between these two super powers, neither attended the Olympic games when the other was the hostess country. The major turning point happened when everything was at its peek and the only way that seemed to end the Cold War was a war. Mikhail Gorbachev was the first Russian politician with serious intention to end the Cold War and open up the Soviet Union to the forces of worldwide economy. Gorbachev expressed his ideology in the books Perestroika and Glasnost (which means new start and transparency). He was responsible for the reunion of East and West Germany. Although he was never really popular amongst Soviet citizens, western politicians appreciated his courage and bravery to pursue his almost radical ideas. Understanding that the Cold war was eventually going to run the Soviet Union into bankruptcy Gorbachev believe in his own visions of a new start with no corruption and make the Soviet Union a better place to live. He decided to allow freedom of speech hoping that thing would get better. This backfired on him and allowed Boris Yeltsin to take over and introduce the free market . "The breakup of the Soviet Union transformed the entire worlds political situation, leading to a complete reformulation of political, economic and military alliances all over the globe ". They believed that these systems were more civilized and less violent than the nationalism of the preceding generations. On the other hand Joseph Stalin felt that Russia had a right to the Eastern European nations it had occupied in World War II. After being invaded by Germany in two consecutive wars, the USSR had suffered tremendously and was not willing to allow anyone to attack it again. It felt that buffer states be created to protect the borders of the fatherland. With
