Children's TV

Children from the ages 6-11 spend more time watching television than they do in the classroom. The level of violence that they see on prime time television is about five violent acts per hour and the level of violence on Saturday that includes cartoons morning programming is about 20 to 25 violent acts per hour. Many children watch TV shows that seem perfectly OK, but they are really leaving a negative image on our children that effect them in many ways. Some of those effects includes; TV can take over a child's life, therefore cutting them off from the rest of the world. Also children watch these TV shows that encourages violence placing a long-term effect on the formation of values and morals. Children also watch how these fictional characters doing immoral things such as drinking, smoking and violence and feel like it is Ok for them to do it because the people on TV are doing it. Another reason is that children are watching fictional characters and mimicking what they do, which usually leading to violence. We, as a society, must save our future and take an active role in protecting our children from the violence on our television.

The power of television turns into an addiction for many people, including children. Many chil

extremely powerful role in the formation of values and morals, to all children's' minds of all ages and all levels of intelligence. These programs "play" with kids' minds; these programs have a tremendous negative effect on our children. Most of these television programs usually lead to other of effects which include violence acts.

If we truly thought that television had no impact on viewers, why would companies spend billion of dollars on television advertising? If commercials have an effect, then so do the shows that the children watch. Dr. George Gerbner states "Living with a television means growing up in a world of about 22,000 commercials a year, 5,000 of them for food products, more then half of which are for low-nutrition sweets and snacks." For example, children mimic many of the violent acts that they see such as Beavis and But-head. One day, a five year old boy watch his favorite cartoon, Beavis and Butt-head, and sees the characters pull one of their famous arson stunts. As a result, he set his own house on fire and his younger sister was killed. Children do learn from television especially when they are missing that in their life or first hand experience with violent acts. Ron Kaufman states "Viewing large amounts of TV violence does not necessary cause a child to act more violently, but it can contribute to promotion a view that violence is commonplace in everyday life as well as creating a heightened fear of being assaulted on the street." This does take an effect on children and the way they will view life as they
