Romeo was pensive and pale, and always sad. He wrote poetry of love and lovers, of what he has not known of, other than what he has read in the books he accumulates. Romeo had become in love with love; speaking of it as a religion picturing love filled only with sorrow and pain. No happiness, just the fear of learning to love then having to let go.

Romeo then met Juliet at the Capulet's house and that in loving her he discovered that joy, not sadness, is a part of life. Romeo began pondering, "This love I feel, that feel no love is this." When he first laid eyes on her. Romeo's not only a courtly, carefree young man, but is capable of the deepest passions of love. Love has become life for Romeo, and he believing without Juliet there can be nothing but death in living. Romeo had grown up, but his whole identity has lied in loving. He had not longer been one with the world but taken away, and had come to care for nothing for its trappings or pain. He had matured into a pure lover. Juliet had become the light of day in darkness to him. He compared her to the sun, moon and stars.

At that moment his love was like no other. It was something so emotionally powerful and exuberant that he would do anything to be in the arms of his lover, Juliet. . . even if it cost him his life.

Romeo's ability to die for his love for Juliet came as no surprise. After the wedding night in the Friars cell, he was willing to risk his life to stay in Verona if Juliet had wished. Romeo then finds out that Juliet is dead. "Then she is well, and nothing can be ill. Her body sleeps in Capel's monument, and her immortal part with angels lives." This is the message that was sent by Balthasar to inform Rome
