Nuclear Weapons

On August 6, 1945, an American B-29 dropped an atomic, (or A-) bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, costing 100s of 1000s of lives. I come here today to inform you about how nuclear weapons came about, what they do, and consequential losses that occurred because of them.

The person most responsible, and who took most of the credit for the discovery of atomic weapons is Albert Einstein. He discovered that if uranium atoms are split, enormous quantities of energy can be released, causing a massive explosion. The main reason the United States prepared nuclear research was because of Germany's position in the nuclear arms race. Out of this effort came the Manhattan Project, in which the first two atomic bombs were developed in 1945.

55 years later, today, warheads and other nuclear weapons are stored in abandoned, underground silos, which are supposed to be safe, but are not. Some are even damaged and have radioactive waste leaking out of them. This shows that the world still isn't rid of nuclear threat. I hope I have informed you on the history and controversy of nuclear weapons.

This bomb was one of the two types of nuclear bombs at this time. It is triggered by the splitting of the nucleus of an atom, causing other atoms to split, therefore causing a giant chain-reaction. The other type of nuclear bomb, called the hydrogen bomb, is triggered by heat targeted directly to the core of the bomb itself, where the uranium is located.
