The Matrix Movie
There are many movies and television shows that have dealt with the issue of conflict between machines and humans. Some examples that come to mind are Terminator, and Star Trek (the Borg Collective) but one movie that stands out in my mind is Matrix. The Matrix is a movie about machines that have supposedly taken over humans and confined them in a computer program that creates reality for them. This confine is known as the Matrix. The beginning of Matrix begins like most science fiction movies, providing us with more questions and answers. It is these questions that caused me to stay on the edge of my seat the first time I saw the movie two years ago and when I recently saw Matrix for the movie review. The mystery or suspense (important in science fiction) in the plot begins when Trinity (a female) is trapped in a building but escapes through a telephone. Events like the one just mentioned continue to occur. For instance, the typing on the screen asking Neo (the main character) to follow the white rabbit was a way of creating that sense of a wonderland feeling according to the director. He wanted us to understand the confusion that must have been felt by Neo when he was confronted
In comparison to the two novels we read so far, Matrix has similarities. One aspect of the Matrix that compares to Childhood's End is the conflict between mankind and a phenomenon (in Matrix it was machines, in Childhood's End it was man's evolution). In Childhood's End the conflict also leads to the destruction of the human race. Another similarity is the unknown, and how some people want to no more and break away from the mesmerizing hold the overlords have on the humans. Each of the main characters above helped to shape the theme and plot of Matrix. I thought it was appropriate to introduce the characters as they appear in the movie. The first characters we see are the three Agents. They act, talk, and even dress in the same way. This does make sense since the Agents are not free thinking individuals. Rather, they are machines programmed by the main system of Matrix to control society. These agents have the task of finding anyone who is opposed to the world that has been created and destroying them. This is why they were after Trinity at the beginning and had been spying on Neo as well. Trinity is a character who provides us with the themes of love and hope. From the start of the movie we see how strong her belief is for Morpheus and his search to locate the chosen one. We are then introduced to Neo or Mr. Anderson, as the Agents know him. He is the one that has been watched by both the Agents and Morpheus. Neo is a person who believes that humans make choices a So far I have mentioned the themes that were so apparent when watching the movie but there were others that helped move the plot right along such as Neo and his skepticism of fate. Neo challenges fate and destiny right to the end when he decides to save Morpheus instead of believing what the oracle told him. Neo also meets other challenges that relate to a theme in Matrix. That theme is fear of the uncertain and being able to let go and trust others. Neo was not only uncertain about Morpheus but also fearful of what was being asked of him. Neo, over came this fear and ended up facing up to the machine and the matrix that had been created. In the film we are introduced to so many themes and is
