Of Mice and Men
[George is sitting on the bank of the Salinas River and the setting Suns reflection still shimmering upon it]. Aint the same no more. Ain't gotta say stuff I awready sed, ain't gotta look out for two people, jes gotta look after me are now. Ahh Lennie....ain't the same without him. Sure quiet without him. Before it used to be like, 'Tell me about the rabbits George, tell me George.' Ahh then I would say something like, 'You get a kick outta that, don't you. Alright, i'll tell you'. Then I would just say it like in a rhythm because I say it so much it don't need no thought it, jes flows. I'll start by sayin, 'Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to.' Haha.... that crazy bastard knew it all imself by heart, but says it ain't the same when he does it. Then I'll talk about the ranch we dreamed of and how its got rabbits and by god don't he love it when I got up to that. Smilin with that big grin of his.
[Georges eyes redden and are gradually filled with tears.] Then we go to the new ranch and we were hoping for a new start no problems but they got worse and worse. Meeting all kinds of people. First it was Curley, wanting a fight and he sure got what he deserved. His wife looking all purty she got it too. 'I didn't mean it George,' thats all he can say. Well he was in for it after he broke Curleys wifes neck. Kinda like the runaway in Weed, but this time it was just him. We should of left there as soon as we got there, I could smell trouble from the start. But I didnt want to leave because I though we'd be outer there as soon as we got a little stake together. But I should of have known there was gonna be trouble quick. We had Vaseline glove Curley, who was jes a trouble starter to Lennie, but by god did he get what he deserved. Then there was Curleys a trigger of the hoosegow. She was so purty to Lennie in those small dresses especailly. I should of known she was like a mine field for Lennie, but I thought the stake would of been together before anything would of happened. e anything soft he has to pet..... That time in Weed he petted him into trouble all right. Touching that girls dress. She didn't know what to do 'part from panic and he didn't know what to do part from hold tighter. Had to sock him round the head with a picket fence. The next minute ya got all these workers chasing after with dogs thinkin' that was rape. Gonna jus live life without him
