The Festal Calendar
A Comparison as Described in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16Being that this class is my first exposure to the Biblical Text, I consider myself a novice on the subject. Therefore, almost everything that I have read so far has raised questions and reactions with me. I have chosen to write about the Festal Calendar as it is detailed in Leviticus, chapter 23 and Deuteronomy, chapter 16. There are three main events, or appointed festivals of the Lord, described in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16. The first one is called the festival of unleavened bread. According to Leviticus 23, it occurs on the 14th day of the first month. And on that day, at twilight, there is a passover offering. But in Deuteronomy 16, the festival of unleavened bread, or passover, is said to happen in the month of Abib. I believe that this is the same month mentioned in Leviticus 23 as the "first month" because in Exodus 13.4, Abib is the month when Moses and the people left Egypt and s
Second is the festival of weeks; also called the Pentecost. Both Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16 place the time of the festival at seven weeks after the first harvest, but neither mentions a specific month. I believe the reason for this is because the first harvest may vary from year to year due to changing climate conditions and the different town's geographical locations. Leviticus 23 is very specific in describing the required sacrifices and offerings for the festival of weeks. It says that each settlement must provide two loaves of bread made with choice flour and leavened (as opposed to unleavened in passover) bread, seven one-year-old lambs, one young bull, and two rams. Whereas in Deuteronomy 16 the offerings demanded are much more vague. In fact, it even seems to take into account each family's harvest yield by only requiring a "freewill offering" proportional to the blessing received. I believe that "blessing received" refers to the amount of crops and livestock that ea
