A detailed Summary of Sonny & Bebop
"Sonny's Blues" is a short story by James Baldwin. It's about a boy's growth to adulthood in a Harlem ghetto. His name is Sonny. He is sentenced to a government institution do to his selling and using of heroin. Sonny moved in with his brother, who he has not seen in 5 years. Sonny's brother, the narrator of the story, is 8 years older than Sonny is. He is married and teaches algebra in New York City. Sonny's brother wants to stay away from Harlem and its people. The symbolic significance of Sonny's name is that the character of Sonny represents bebop in both its positive and negative aspects. The meaning of "Sonny's Blues" is not the transcendence of the human condition through art, but is instead about sadness and joy.
Bebop was first introduced in the early nineteen hundreds. It became very controversial at a time when jazz was gaining respectability. While jazz encouraged people to dance and have a good time, bebop told them to do something totally different. The bebop style is full of emotions that were often dark, sad, and brooding. Very rarely did bebop make someone feel happiness and joy.

Sonny's blues is about love and happiness. It's about tears of love and care. Life is not only about suffering, but also about being happy and enjoying life to the fullest. It's ok to fail in life, after all, pain makes us stronger. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Sonny also represents bebop in the happiness and joy that were also characteristics of bebop. The blues were tales of how we suffer and how we are delighted. How the triumph is never new. Here we see how Sonny's brother understood that there is also happiness in the blues. There is no other tale to tell; it's the only light we've got in all this darkness (Literature and Society, 102).
