William Blake was one of England's great poets. His diversity and insight in human nature is truly masterful, being able to write in the voice of a young child with all the innocence this brings and then in the voice of an adult. Blake did write of dreams and sunny days, angels, little ones leaping, shouting, and laughing, but to Blake these were all Songs of Innocence. A child had not experienced enough to "know" that life was dreadful, dreary, cruel, and merciless. Going through many of lifes experiences hardened him to life and perhaps was the insperation for Songs of Experience. Blake was able to take a happy poem, with laughter and sun and such, and change it only slightly to change it to a much darker tone.

William Blake was born in 1757 and had no formal education. He lived in or near London for most of his life. Consequently, London became the subject of much of his work. He was well read in the Bible, Milton and Greek and Latin classic literature, evident throughout his work. Although not sharing the same title The Lamb from Songs of Innocence is comparable with The Tyger from The songs of Experience. While a Lamb seems like a naive animal that is pure like its "Softest clothing, wooly, bright," (112) and how it has a "tender voice" (112). Furthermore, the Lamb was asked if it knew who had created it. Because it was so "meek" and "mild." In contrast, The Tyger, the subject of a poem of the same name, has a creator whose characteristics are such as the "immortal hand or eye" hands that "seize the fire" (121). Blake meant for both these animals to contrast each other. Similarly, he puts in strong details such as the "dread hand and dread feet" (121) and strong ironclad objects such as the hammer and the chain. This also gives the reader the impression that the creation of the incredible machine that can destroy was no accident. While asking the same question: who had created you, it was put in such a way that the Tyger was so much more strong and knowledgeable than the Lamb. The Tyger expected to know who its creator is (121).

Blake is one of the Greatest poets England has produced. With his ability to bring so much feeling into his work that the reader is moved. Blake was able to write poetry as a small child, The Songs of Innocence, in the which, he wrote works that were happy and innocent and as an adult, The songs of Experience, he wrote works that are moving and melancholy.
