Beowulf is an Epic

An Epic is a long narrative poem written in a dignified style about deeds and accomplishments of a hero. An Epic features a hero who goes on a journey and returns with his cultures highest values. On the heroes journey he endures great trials and hardships. During the journey there are detailed battles. The hero also possesses supernatural strength and powers. Beowulf has all the characteristics of an Epic.

During the Epic Beowulf, Beowulf endures many hardships and trials. In the story they tell of a flashback were Beowulf and a strong warrior named Breca make a bet to see who can stay in the water the longest. Beowulf speaks to Unferth:

"I showed the greater stamina, endured hardship without equal in the heaving water. ...A fierce monster held me tightly in its grasps; but it was give to me to bury my sword my battle weapon into its breast" (450-475)

Another hardship Beowulf endures is when he has his run in with Grendel. During this hardship Beowulf grads Grendels arm and rips the arm form its socket. Hrothgar said this after the incident:


tries to strike Grendel's mother down with his normal sword but it isn't enough. So he then has to pick up a gigantic and use it to decapitate Grendel's mother. Those are the trials Beowulf endures during the Epic.

Murderous caller to escape with his lie;" (697-702)

"That the sharp blade slashed through her neck, smashed the vertebrae; it severed her head from the lated body: she fell at his feet. The sword was bloodstained" (1258-1260)

Beowulf shows superhuman strength and powers throughout the Epic. He shows his superhuman power when he kills a sea-dragon with one shot of his bow.

Beowulf's super human strength and power help him to survive throughout the Epic.

In conclusion Beowulf is an Epic because it has all the characteristics of Epic. It was a long narrative poem written in a dignified style. During the Epic Beowulf, Beowulf goes on a journey and on that journey he endures great trials and hardships. Beowulf shows superhuman strength and powers throughout the Epic. And the battles in Beowulf are well detailed. Beowulf is an Epic.
