Caesar

THE EXTREMLY CONDENSED HISTORY OF ROME UP TO THE TIME OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS CAESAR

The story beings in a myth involving two twins who are born and are suckled by a wolf (don't ask). The twins are Romulus and Remus. Romulus and Remus found what would become Rome. Romulus tell Remus never to step outside this boundary. Remus does. Romulus kills him (you know brothers!). Romulus will found Rome on 21st of April 753 BC. As king he would later be murdered. This is a trend.

Rome is ruled by a king, and all is well except for the fact that a monarchy can never rule peacefully. A later king will be overthrown by the masses with the help of a man named Brutus and THE REPUBLIC is formed. This Republic is led by a SENATE, which is a body of older, wiser men. These old, wise men elect two consuls annually (think dual presidents). These wise old men rule over the popular assembly in which all male citizens belong. That's right, Rome is sexist. The population consists of rich patricians and poorer PLEBIANS. Rome will despise any form of monarchy from this point on and take honor in being a republic.

Well, Rome grows as a city and becomes pretty decent (think Cleveland), but in those days you know little cities would like to

Don't think that just because Pompey doesn't have a head he can't still cause trouble. His sons were angry with Caesar and were not about to let him get away with indirectly killing their daddy. They teamed up with a man named Cato the Younger who for the longest time was protesting against Caesar. Caesar went to them and Vini Vidi Vici-ed them ("I came; I saw; I conquered")

So here we begin the play. Caesar has come home from war to his Rome where the Senate still rules (Somewhat). The senate remembers what Caesar was like as consul and is a bit weary. Cicero still is a major player. Cassius is whining about his lions. Brutus is dutifully being a senator. Pompey is dead. Let's have a parade.

After Caesar's consulship is over, he becomes governor over part of a Gaul (France). Caesar creates an army and for the next nine years becomes a great general. He creates a very loyal army as he stomps on Gauls like they were grapes. Pompey is back in Rome at this time and begins to quake in his boots as he hears of Caesar's great conquests. Pompey sees Caesar as a threat, so he teams up with the Senate who is happy to watch the triumvirate turn on each other. Crassus meanwhile feels left out of the whole "I'm-a-powerful-general-aren't-I-a-manly-man" contest the other two are having, so he goes into parthia to fight and is killed.

A man named Cicero is asked to join their crew. Cicero was a powerful senator who once was consul. He was the most brilliant orator and lawyer in Rome, and was respected by all. He also was a die-hard republic lover. Remember, Rome is ruled by a senate with Consuls supposedly having a little power. This triumvirate was getting a bit power hungry. Caesar did not respect the Senate whatsoever. He forced them all to vote for his measures under penalty of death. Cicero would write later how people would thank him for voting their way when Cicero never voted at all. Caesar simply signed Cicero's name to bills. Throughout his consulship senators grumbled in Rome. In fact, Cicero may have been behind an assassination attempt. Luckily for Caesar, he discovered it beforehand and was able to stop it. Cicero was never publicly blamed for it though.

Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey combine forces in 60 BC. Pompey marries Caesar's daughter. Caesar is now elected consul (with a man named Biblius who is so mad that Caesar won't let him do anything that he stays in his house all year), and he helps out Pompey and Crassus with favors. Caesar and Pompey would do tricky things like get land bills passed for Pompey's army by sweet talking the crowds of people. This was Caesar's specialty, persuading the masses. Both Biblious and a man named Cato the Younger spoke against him. The crowd simply dumped trash on Biblius (No wonder he stayed in his house for the rest of the year!)

fight with each other. Older civilizations (Macedonia under Philip, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians) were the major powers. They were busy fighting amongst each other in the East. (Anything east of Italy is considered east in those days.) Rome decides it wants to scrap with citie
